SUNSHINE AT ST NEOTS
What a difference a month makes! Four weeks after St Neots' opening meeting was brought to a premature halt by torrential rain, the only complaint heard at the 11 May meeting was that it was far too hot! Despite a busy weekend, with 13 of NASA's 21 Leagues running race meetings, St Neots attracted another good turnout of 123 cars and 136 drivers for the third of East Anglia's National Qualifying rounds.

SUTTLE WINS STU'S MEMORIAL
For the second year running, a Class 2 driver won the Stu Nicholls Memorial Trophy at the end of a very successful weekend's racing at the Yorkshire Dales club's Thornborough track. Following Tim Longfield's success last year, it was the turn of York's Alan Suttle who held off Kev Bowes' Class 3 car to take the very well supported Champion of Champions race and receive the coveted trophy from Sue Nicholls.
Despite slightly wet conditions for the "Fun Day" on Sunday, there was a field of 28 cars for the "Unofficial Stock Hatch Championship", while another 150 cars contested an afternoon of Opens and novelty races. On Monday the track dried out and the sun came out as 270 drivers contested the trophy meeting. The highlight for many was a thrilling Class 7 final, won by Solway's Mike Edgar after an epic battle with Anthony Herbert, Dan Jennings, Colin Chilvers, James Almack and Graham Blackburn.

SOUTH WALES BAS - HOT ACTION CLEARS FOG
The South Wales League set a high standard for the remaining hosts of 2008 BAS rounds to follow. The league approached the weekend with confidence that their members could pull off a successful event despite wet weather in the run-up to the meeting and a dismal forecast for the weekend. On Saturday the rain held off and despite one or two early delays, the South Wales team pulled the event back on schedule and completed two full sets of heats with some first rate racing on the fast Pendine track. Sunday started well, but the recurring nightmare of those who know this venue came to life as the fog rolled in and stopped play before the end of the heats. Many drivers were prepared for an early start for home, but the experienced locals just knew that the fog would clear as quickly as it arrived. Two hours later the sun was shining and the hard fought finals were under way. The meeting finished at 6 pm with the best supported Champion of Champions races at a BAS round for a very long time. A total of 555 drivers signed on - thankfully well down on the 760 entries for 2007's opening round.

WET, WET, WET YORK
York club had to cancel their first two meetings of the season, but conditions were dry and dusty as the track was prepared for the North Yorkshire League's rescheduled first National qualifier. When the rain arrived early on Sunday there wasn't much choice but to carry on, and through a morning of steadily worsening conditions the two sets of qualifying heats were completed. The meeting continued, but it didn't take long to run out of cars, with many of the 136 in attendance not even being unloaded.

YORKSHIRE DALES OPENER
The Yorkshire Dales club has had a busy winter converting the Nationals track at Thornborough into a much more compact club racing venue, but their efforts were rewarded with a very busy opening meeting with an entry of 214 drivers. The meeting had a delayed start to accommodate several North Western drivers who headed across from the cancelled North Wales meeting, but once under way the programme was run with the utmost efficiency, comfortably beating the magic timetable benchmark of 18 races per hour. The rain held off for some excellent racing with the only serious incident being a roll for Pete Mattison in the Class 6 final.

QUALIFIERS IN THE EAST
The Scunthorpe and St Neots clubs had contrasting fortunes at the National Qualifying meetings on 13 April, while York's National qualifier had to be cancelled altogether. At Scunthorpe the track started off somewhat muddy, with large quantities of water having been pumped off the track, but conditions then improved through the day. St Neots started off by rolling and watering a dry track, that provided superb racing through the first half of the event, only for heavy rain to move in towards the end of the heats, causing the finals to be cancelled for safety reasons halfway through. Both meeting attracted large entries, with 171 drivers signed on at St Neots and 178 at Scunny.

With effect from the May 2008 issue, we're afraid we have to increase the cover price of Autograss Review to £2.50, and the annual subscription price to £25.00. This is our first price increase for eight years and represents an increase of less than three per cent per annum; during those eight years our printing and postage costs have increased significantly, and we don't need to tell you about our fuel costs in attending meetings all over the country. The Review will still be cheaper than a burger at most race tracks, and will be better for you!
NEW START IN SOMERSET
Despite the Somerset Raceway waking on Sunday morning to a covering of snow, and competitors from all directions having to battle through snowstorms to arrive at the track, the snow at the South Somerset club’s new venue near Highbridge soon cleared to give a mostly sunny day and the first day’s racing showed great promise for the new track.
The next meeting at the Somerset Raceway, on April 20, will see TV cameras in attendance, and celebrity races featuring members of the neighbouring Somerset Rebels Speedway time. Already this new venue is providing the focus for a big step forward in the promotion of Autograss in the South West.

SUNNY DAY AT TRENT
The last weekend of March saw two meetings taking place, just a few miles apart at NOTTINGHAM and at TRENT's Newark track. Both were well supported, with Trent attracting 129 cars and 145 drivers for the first event of the CGTRO season. With the startline area of the track being the worst affected by the recent rain, flag starts from an improvised startline on the track were the order of the day, while inroads were made on the infield grass to provide a fresh racing surface. The track coped well and by finals time there was a fast, and even slightly dusty, surface to provide some good racing.

On Monday most of the drivers who'd been chasing National qualifying points had disappeared, while a few of the long distance travellers had set off for home, including the Southern Irish contingent, who were taking in the SOUTH WALES meeting on their way to the ferry. More drivers arrived at Hereford for Monday's racing, though, including several with new cars to shake down, and this resulted in a good field of 113 drivers for day three, who once again enjoyed excellent dry conditions.

EASTER PART TWO
Easter Sunday saw racing at Scarborough, Pennine and WEST WALES as well as the second day of the Hereford meeting. Scarborough's Hunmanby track escaped most of the snow that had blanketed much of the north and east of England overnight, and Yorkshire's first meeting of 2008 took place in mainly sunny conditions, with the odd hail or snow shower. Good track preparation paid off again as the racing line dried out during the day providing the entry of 57 drivers with a good day's racing.

EASTER SNOW AND SUN
Although the Easter fixtures at Spalding, Scunthorpe and York had been cancelled thanks to the wintry weather, the first day of Hereford's three day meeting was bathed in sunshine, with the stiff wind quickly blowing away the few squally snow showers. The Hereford club has returned this year to its previous venue, the "Quarry Field" at Monkland, near Leominster, where the Saturday event saw a reasonable entry of 84 drivers and produced some entertaining racing. Many more entries were expected for Sunday's West Midland League qualifying round, with another good day's racing in prospect for Easter Monday.

2008 SEASON UNDER WAY
The weather has been the big winner at the start of the 2008 season, with the planned opening events at South Wales, on 9 March, and Evesham and Severn Valley, on 16 March, falling victims of the wet conditions. It was left to Nottingham to kick off the UK racing season on 16 March, with a turnout of 114 cars and 126 drivers. After 17 hours of solid rain before the start, conditions were challenging to begin with, but typically Nottingham's track preparation and management paid off, with an excellent surface rewarding those drivers who persevered until the finals.
Now it's Easter, with a full programme of racing planned, if the weather co-operates. Highlights should include the three-day Hereford meeting on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. For Welsh racers there's a double header with the West Wales League running on Sunday and the South Wales League on Monday. Similarly Northern drivers should enjoy two days' action with a choice between Scarborough and Scunthorpe on Sunday, and York on Monday. Pennine should also be a popular choice on Sunday, but the planned meeting at Spalding is cancelled.

RACE RETRO AT STONELEIGH
For the fourth year running, NASA had a stand at the fascinating Race Retro show, presenting Autograss to an audience more familiar with circuit racing, rallying, trials and other forms of motor sport. Once again the show was judged to be a success for NASA, with the beatifully presented cars of Daniel Robins (BP Grassing Clsass 1 Mini), Jack Gibbons (Junior Special) and Vinny Gibbons (Chevy V8 Class 10) attracting much attention over the three days of the show.
Apart from the Grassers, everyone with a love of motorsport will have found their favourite cars (or bikes) at Stoneleigh. Two of our personal favourites were the 1968 Alan Mann Escort and the 1970 Formula 2 Brabham, but if you don't agree with our choice, you should have been there!
WINTER ACTION REVISITED
A selection of photos from the NEC live action arena, and from the Saturday night racing at Arena Essex, are now included in our web galleries, by courtesy of Matt Bull. If you want copies of any of these photos, they can be ordered on line at Matt's own site, www.racepixels.co.uk.
Both days' action at Arena Essex will be available soon on DVD from Russell Williams at Race Video. For ordering details, go to www.crashnet.org.uk/race_video
