HIGH SPIRITS AT HIGH EDGE
After
several weeks’ worth of “end of season specials” it was finally time to wind
up the 2007 season, so how appropriate it was to go to the end of the world
to do it! To be fair, the New High Edge Raceway isn’t really the end of the
world, but on a clear day you can definitely see it from there. Despite the
fog, and rain sweeping across the track, around 50 Autograss cars turned up
at Startrax Promotions' "Winternationals" event at the paperclip-shaped
quarter mile tarmac oval, high in the Peak District outside Buxton, sharing
the programme with the regular stadium racing classes. The wind blew the
rain and fog away to allow the Grassers to race two sets of heats in the
morning, and although stormy weather then moved in during the afternoon, it
didn't dampen everyone's enjoyment. Our thanks to Steve Rees and Startrax
for making the facility available, and to Ged Reek of Leewood club for
co-ordinating the meeting for the second year running.

A WET AND WINDY BLYTON
The annual "Rallycross-type" event at Blyton in Lincolnshire has been lucky with the weather for the last five years, but those who turned out this year braved a cold, wet, windy day reminiscent of the first Blyton event in 2002. A record entry of 154 was reduced to 137 cars that actually appeared, and numbers diminished during the day until only 42 cars turned out for their class finals. The organisers rushed through the programme in record time, providing practice runs, three heats and finals and finishing the whole event by 1.20 pm. The Superfinal race was abandoned as the marshals had had enough by this time.
BLYTON RESULTS: GROUP A (Class 1): 1st SC9 Tom Sanderson 2nd N789 Peter Hall 3rd WR492 Neil Richardson. GROUP B (Class 2/Stock Rod/GT Rod/Rookie Rod): 1st C63 Ian Harvey 2nd NW5 Rich Owen 3rd Y155 Kev Frankland. GROUP C (Class 3/6/Autocross): 1st ST441 Aaron Mackenzie 2nd ST31 Tim Brown 3rd IK21 John Berry. GROUP D (Class 4/5/Stock Hatch): 1st Y21 Paul Watson 2nd Y170 Jonathan Bennett 3rd NS257 Julian Galowicz. GROUP E (Bike-engined Specials/NORA Superlite): 1st R7 Paul Fackrell 2nd C83E Barry Hathaway 3rd SL177 Peter Cobb. GROUP F (Car-engined Specials): 1st Y32 Jem Snowden 2nd C10E Paul Hassell 3rd R309 Mike Liddiatt. GROUP G (Class 7): 1st SC45 Carl Swift 2nd ST65 Simon Pallett 3rd C14E Keith Rapley.
Photos from the Blyton meeting will be posted soon, but as we weren't willing to risk our better cameras in the conditions, the quality won't be good enough for these photos to be available for sale. Anyone wanting a record of this event should contact Westcountry Videos, who will have all the racing on DVD.
PAUL MASTERS THE TARMAC
With the Autograss season officially over, it was time for the first of the out-of-season events, the Eric Carlin Memorial Grasstrack Grand Prix, on the quarter mile tarmac oval at Northampton International Raceway. This meeting, promoted by Kevin and Ben Hurdman at the Incarace-controlled venue, follows in the tradition of the Birmingham Wheels and Hednesford events that were so popular in the 1990s.
Despite some exciting and close-fought racing throughout the afternoon, the meeting proved virtually incident and damage free. A full inversion of the starting grid for all the class finals meant that the successful drivers from the heats had to battle their way through from the back of the field, setting up a number of ultra-close finishes. At the end of the day, Ludlow Class 3 racer Paul Stevens emerged in front of a full field in the Champion of Champions race and became the second recipient of the Eric Carlin Memorial Trophy, presented by Lee Carlin, Eric's grandson. Eric Carlin had been the driving force behind the Birmingham and Hednesford events, and the Northampton events are building into a worthy memorial to the much missed elder statesman of Autograss racing.

WINTER SUNSHINE SERIES
Nottingham's traditional three-round Winter Series was run in most unseasonable conditions this year; sunshine and perfect track conditions at the Oxton Raceway meant that the 2007 Autograss season came to a close with virtually all drivers wanting more!
All three Winter Series events attracted well
over 200 entries, but unlike previous years there were no finals run, and
therefore no results for each individual meeting; instead the series was
decided on points from nine heats over the three race days. Another break
with tradition was that the season didn't end with Nottingham's famous
bonfire and fireworks - to avoid upsetting the pigs that have moved into the
neighbouring field! Howe

PENHOW BEAT THE RAIN
Although there were originally no Autograss meetings scheduled for 28 October, three clubs, Penhow, STAR and Scunthorpe took the opportunity to stage events making up for cancellations earlier in the year. Penhow's trophy meeting at Magor brought the season to an end in the Western region and despite steady rain falling for most of the night and morning attracted a healthy turnout of 130 drivers. The rain continued throughout the morning, but conditions later improved and Penhow once again proved that they have a track that will race well in all conditions. Some closely fought class finals led to a well supported Champion of Champions race, and the efficient organisation allowed time for plenty of Open racing before an early finish. Champion of Champions honours went to Class 2 driver "Lloydy Boy" Morgan, who had earlier beaten his famous uncle, three times National Champion Ian Harvey, who was making a racing comeback in the ex-Ady Taylor/Laura Morgan Nova.

NASA-SEGTO SUCCESS
The 2007 NASA-SEGTO Challenge was run over two meetings; the first at Southern Autosport Association's chalk-surfaced oval at Horndean, near Portsmouth, was run to a normal SEGTO format, with a strong field of NASA drivers slotted into the most appropriate SEGTO classes, while a week later the visiting SEGTO drivers sampled the NASA style of racing at the Concord club's track at Cold Norton, Essex, Both events ran smoothly, in perfect weather conditions and were thoroughly enjoyed by the drivers from both organisations.

EAST ANGLIAN OPEN
The East Anglian League Open was run at the St Neots track at the end of September. Although the postponement of other meetings earlier in the year resulted in several clashing fixtures, a small number of long distance travellers joined the more local drivers to produce a competitive weekend's racing, with 134 drivers racing on Saturday and 146 on Sunday. At the end of the weekend there was a surprise result to the Champion of Champions race; no surprise that it was the T88 Xtreme Mini that won, as the car's dominated the Class 5 results this year, but the driver was not John Deegan but Shane Rea, one of John's crew with no previous racing experience. Mary Deegan used the same car to win the Ladies' title and Junior honours went to Joe Ferguson, a regular competitor in the circuit racing SaxMax series, who made a one-off return to Autograss ion the BP Grassing Mini.

INVICTA BAS HITS HIGH NOTE
The British Autograss Series ended with its most successful round for some time, hosted in perfect weather and track conditions by the Invicta Kent club at Ivychurch. Less than 50 per cent of the registered BAS competitors made it through to the end of a challenging season for the series, but a good turnout of local drivers, particularly in the Junior class, made the entry up to a total of 368 - ideal numbers for a very fast paced and competitive, yet friendly and relaxed event.
A full report will follow soon in Autograss Review (probably in our November issue) but in the meantime full results can be downloaded here.

ANDY & ANDY STAR AT THE ROCK
It had been a long time coming, but Autograss cars, along with SEGTO grasstrack cars, finally made their debut at Britain’s most impressive motorsport facility, Rockingham Motor Speedway, as part of the Motorfest ’07 weekend.
Motorfest, jointly organised by leading short oval race promoters Incarace Ltd and Spedeworth International, featured the SCSA V8 Stock Cars and Pickup Trucks racing on the full 1.5 mile oval; six classes of short oval race cars on a track utilising the home straight and the pit lane of the main circuit, plus the NASA and SEGTO cars using a purpose built dirt track just outside the main arena.
After a full weekend’s racing and other entertainment, in perfect weather conditions, the overall winners from the ten racing disciplines on show, were to compete on even terms for a £10,000 cash prize in the “King of the Rock” race. The cars, and even the track, to be used were a closely guarded secret until the very last moment, when ten identical VW Beetles (actually the Beetle lookalike cars used in the Uniroyal Funcup endurance racing series) emerged onto Rockingham’s full international road course for a ten lap race. Despite their lack of circuit racing experience, and no pre-race practice, the two grass representatives performed well. Andy Wilkinson, representing SEGTO, stayed with the main pack all the way and although NASA’s Andy Lodge lost touch with the pack after going off avoiding a spinning car, he caught up again under a late race caution and made up two places on the last lap to finish eighth, one spot behind the SEGTO man. The race was being dominated by SCSA Champion Colin White until the caution flag was thrown to close the field up for a two lap shootout. This helped Superstox driver Jason Cooper to take the lead and claim the £10,000 prize.
All credit to the East Anglian and Fenland League committees, who worked closely with SEGTO, Incarace and Spedeworth to ensure that, despite massive logistical difficulties, the event could take place and eventually prove hugely enjoyable for all concerned.

SANDRA'S LADIES' TITLE
Sandra Bagley regained the Ladies' National Champion of Champions title, which she also won in 2005, by taking a clear win in the final race of a busy Ladies' and Juniors' National Championship weekend, hosted by the West Wales League at Hodgeston, near Pembroke.
York driver Ollie Burley capped his successful Junior career by taking National honours, coming out as the best of 124 competitors after three gruelling heats, quarter finals and semi-finals. The Junior Special title, subject to appeal, went to Lee Deegan, who passed two cars on the last corner to cross the line in third place; the first two finishers were later excluded following post race scrutineering.
The full list of Ladies' Champions was: CLASS 1 - YD35 Rachael Davis CLASS 2 - R900 Laura Morgan CLASS 3 - Y62 Jo Thompson CLASS 4 - NR72 Laura Atyeo CLASS 5 - C31 Sandra Bagley CLASS 6 - C212E Josie Cox CLASS 7 - TA8 Louise (Teifi) Jones CLASS 8 - E122 Sally Stratton CLASS 9 - MA1 Val Shanahan CLASS 10 - ARC3 Clare Horner

ROSSI'S THE FASTEST MAN
Antony Ross might have won virtually everything at National and BAS level during his career, but having been born into the Lincolnshire Autograss scene he'd been brought up regarding the Fastest Man on Grass title as the sport's biggest prize. "I've been watching other people win this one for thirty four years" said Antony as he finally accepted the trophy from Grassing legend Ken Hammond at the end of a spectacular, and at times controversial, weekend's racing that established the new Caenby Corner track as a first rate venue. The Fastest Lady title was successfully defended by Clare Horner, while Mike Mackenzie saw off a combined field of Minis and Specials to win the Fastest Junior on Grass title. The weekend's other major trophy, the Lincolnshire Open Championship, went to Yorkshire Dales Class 2 racer Colin Ramsay.

Northumberland driver Peter Cobb was the winner of the fifth annual Cumberland Open Championship, held at the Solway Autograss Club's superb new venue at Hay Close, Calthwaite, near Penrith. Peter's F600 Stock Special came through the field to win a thrilling Champion of Champions race, in which seven of the eleven starters were in a position to win on the last lap. The Ladies' title went to Lin Cunningham in her Class 2 Micra and the Juniors to Jamie Little's NGRE-prepared Mini.
The Cumberland Open, well supported despite the rain that fell almost throughout the two day event, also formed the final round of the Sportway Tyres Northern Challenge and the new Champions were crowned at the end of the event.

Just to whet your appetite, before we've finished sorting the 10,000 + photos we have from the Nationals, here's the most spectacular (and frightening) incident from the weekend. Terry Allen got out unhurt.
Terry's roll will also be featured, along with the best of the action from all the classes, interviews, etc, on the Nationals Highlights DVD, available soon from Westcountry Videos (01884 840403).
THE STOCK HATCH NATIONALS
The fourth annual "National Championship" for the Stock Hatch class was won convincingly by the Leewood Club's only current Stock Hatch driver, Lee Buckley from Rochdale, who had completed his immaculately prepared Nova specially for the event. A field of 28 Stock Hatches drawn from Yorkshire Dales, York, Scarborough, Pennine and Sturton & Stow clubs (unfortunately drivers from Solway and Concord were conspicuous by their absence, while the Scottish entrants were sadly unable to make it) provided action packed racing throughout a most enjoyable weekend of racing at the Scarborough club's spectacular Hunmanby Raceway.

The Ladies' Stock Hatch "final" was won for the fourth year running by Clare Horner. However, Clare was forced to switch cars after the first heat because her intended drive, Kevin Mackenzie's Y100 car, was sidelined with a blown engine. Lee Buckley sportingly offered her his car (a re-shelled version of the Chris Mackenzie car that took Clare to the 2005 and 2006 titles), but it was agreed to award the Ladies' trophies on aggregate points from their four races. The win was taken by Class 1 racer Nikki Shepherdson, in her first Stock Hatch drive.

THE BOB ROBINS MEMORIAL
The St Neots club's memorial meeting for the club's late President, Bob Robins, proved a great success despite the efforts of the weather to ruin it. Saturday's racing was run in ideal track conditions after beginning in light rain, and the "back to the 1980s" race format, with handicapped grid starts for the class heats, was well received by drivers and spectators alike.
Tremendous efforts were required to make the track raceable on Sunday, after heavy overnight rain, but the club members worked so hard, and to such good effect, on the track, that by the time the finals started it was dry and needing watering!
The Champion of Champions race, for the Bob Robins Memorial Trophy, came down to a last lap battle between two family members; Bob's grandson Daniel in his Class 1 Mini and Bob's nephew Ian in his Class 9 Special. Ian snatched the win on the line, but sportingly declined the trophy, which was then awarded to Daniel.
Thanks to the generous support of local and visiting drivers (including those who happily paid "fines" of 50p for every cone they hit on the track), the meeting raised a substantial sum of money for Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation.

GREAT SCOTT!
The second Scottish Open provided more proof that you don't need a huge field of cars to provide an enjoyable and competitive weekend's racing. The entry at the Central Scotland club's excellent Lochgelly venue was dominated by the growing ranks of Scottish drivers, with a strong contingent travelling from Northern Ireland and a small handful of English racers, with some potential visitors being kept away by the severe weather that hit Northern England on the preceding Friday.
Despite overnight rain at Lochgelly, the track escaped the worst of the weather and dried out steadily during the weekend. The event comprised 4 heats and finals over the two days, followed by Open racing. The overall Champion of Champions title went to local driver Scott Graham from Kirkcaldy, who shares his Class 2 Nissan Micra with father Bob. The Ladies' title was won by Northern Ireland's Hayley Robinson, in her Berrisford Class 8, and the top Junior, after many reruns of the final, was Stranraer's Liam Harvey.

NEXT UP : THE SECOND SCOTTISH OPEN
It’s now a year since Autograss racing made the breakthrough into Scotland and became a truly National sport. The 2006 Scottish Open, at Lochgelly, Fife, was attended by just 51 drivers, including 9 members of the Central Scotland club. When we return to Lochgelly for the anniversary event we’ll find a very different scene, Central Scotland’s membership has been growing by the week and it’s expected that over 60 Scottish racers will be present to take on the hoped-for strong contingent of visitors from across the border, and across the Irish sea.
The venue for the Scottish Open is just off the A92 duel carriageway, a few miles from Junction 2A of the M90. It’s a single meeting over two days, and racing starts at 11 am each day. (Visitors from the south, please allow extra time for your journey as we understand that the road works at the Forth Bridge are causing havoc – but it’ll be worth braving the traffic!)

SKY'S THE LIMIT FOR MAP
Not quite a record breaker in terms of numbers (there was a total of 732 entries, compared to the record 803 in 2006), the 2007 MAP Open probably broke all records in terms of the amount of action and incident crammed into the weekend. After heavy rain for much of the preceding two weeks there was some doubt as to whether the meeting would take place at all (last time it was cancelled was in 1999, when a freak storm left the track under water) but MAP made the right decision to go ahead as the event took place in its usual glorious sunshine. Extensive maintenance was required as the track dried out during Saturday, and the first day’s racing was punctuated by many incidents, including sixteen rollovers, but the surface was as good as ever for Sunday, when Sky Sports cameras captured the action and atmosphere for a one hour programme, presented by Dave Richardson and Barry Lee, and scheduled to be shown in a few weeks’ time. The Eric Carlin Memorial Trophy (surely the most imposing trophy in Autograss) was won in the Champion of Champions race by John Deegan. Mel Gallagher successfully retained her Ladies’ Champion of Champions title and the British Junior championship title went to Scott Aldridge.
