WATSON WINS AT BLYTON

For the fifth year running, an assortment of Grasstrack and other cars was let loose on the Rallycross track at Blyton in Lincolnshire. The meeting on 19 November would have made regular Rallycross supporters very jealous; 143 cars racing, with practice and 70 races completed between 8.15 am and 3 pm. Once again the event was blessed with fine weather and despite the high speeds (some of the Specials being clocked at over 130 mph) and the close competition, there were no serious incidents. The "Superfinal" race was won, for the second time in the history of the event, by York's Paul Watson in his Peugeot-powered Mini.

RESULTS:

GROUP A: 1st Tom Sanderson (Mini 1000) 2nd Jack Brown (Mini 1000) 3rd Ben van den Bos (Mini 1000). GROUP B: 1st Craig Lomax (Nova 1300) 2nd Phil Owen (Nova 1300) 3rd Peter Hilton (Nova 1300). ANDY THE TARMAC MASTER

75 Autograss cars and half a dozen other short circuit racers contested the inaugural "Eric Carlin Memorial Grasstrack Grand Prix" at Northampton International Raceway (otherwise known as Brafield Stadium) on November 12. The dominant drivers, the only two to win all their heats and finals, were Paul Fackrell (Class 8) and Andy Lee (Class 10). Andy then came through the field to win the Champion of Champions race, and the Eric Carlin Memorial Trophy.

BUMPER BONFIRE MEETING

Nottingham's traditional end-of season Bonfire Meeting wasn't quite the last event of 2006, but it attracted a record entry with 254 cars taking part, in perfect track conditions at Oxton Raceway. The Nottingham club performed miracles to squeeze all the racing into the shrinking daylight hours, and the last few finals were run in virtual darkness, before everyone turned their attention to the superb bonfire and firework display.

NASA - SEGTO  ROUND 2

- WASHOUT AT LAYHAMS

Sadly, after a lot of work to prepare and upgrade the the Croydon Motor Sports Club's track at Layhams Farm, Keston, the weather was the only winner at SEGTO's round of the 2006 Challenge. The long, fast chalk-surfaced track started the day very sticky after heavy rain during the week, but was drying nicely until the rain set in again after the first race. Although the surface remained surprisingly grippy, worsening conditions meant the decision had to be made to abandon the meeting after one heat for all classes. 92 SEGTO drivers were joined by 43 from NASA and NASA drivers won in six out of the eight classes.

The Production A/Class 1 race was red flagged before half distance due to a roll for Tongham Motor Club driver Graham Goddard. White grade driver Ben Shirley was awarded the win from a rapidly closing Fred Carpenter (SN22). Production B/Class 2 saw a NASA win as Lance Bowen (BC6) held off Paul Cottrell (IK157). Modsaloon C/Class 4 was split into two groups; the Croydon Motor Sports drivers ran in one heat (for club points reasons) and all visitors in the other, in which Martin Bowen (BC1) emulated son Lance's win. A hectic 1450 Hot Rod/Class 5 race was rerun and won by Gareth Lines (SN23). The Super Saloon race was dominated by Craig Smith (P55) in his Class 6 Astra. Only two cars finished the Specials race; Isle of Wight driver Kenny Page (R177) spun out of the lead and Tongham Motor Club's Fred Barnes won. The Juniors were split and the two heats were led by George Tillson-Smith (SN296) and Harry Tillson (SN196) until both were delayed by backmarkers, with George eventually rolling. Local boy Matthew Champion and Andrew Empson (SN208) were the winners. Claire Blackman (WS29) won the Ladies' race.

NASA v SEGTO AT ST NEOTS

The NASA-SEGTO Challenge continues to grow in popularity. 220 drivers raced in the first leg of the 2006 Challenge at St Neots, including 69 visitors from SEGTO (South Eastern Grasstrack Organisation). The SEGTO drivers adapted well to the completely different style of NASA racing, taking many heat wins and several trophy positions in the finals, including wins in Class 1, Juniors and Class 11A.

Now it's the turn of the NASA drivers to try something different - longer races, with grid starts on one of the UK's longest and fastest oval tracks. Round 2 takes place this Sunday, 22 October, at Croydon Motor Sports' track, Layhams Farm, Keston, Kent. The 516-yard chalk-surfaced track has been re-graded in preparation for the Challenge meeting, now with very fast banked bends. Travel time is two hours or less from St Neots, the track being close to M25 Junction 4. Gates open at midday Saturday (closed 9 pm Saturday to 7 am Sunday); Scrutineering is at 8 am Sunday and racing starts at 11 am Sunday.

FIREWORKS AND DONUTS

By the very nature of the sport Autograss tracks come and go, but the Yorkshire Dales club's track at Kiplin held a very special place in the hearts of most who'd raced, officiated or spectated there. The last meeting at Kiplin proved to be a memorable occasion, starting with a well attended bonfire and fireworks on Saturday night, and then a very full day's racing for well over 200 competitors. The day ended with a special invitation race for all those Yorkshire Dales members who'd raced in both the first meeting, in April 1993, and this last event. With 16 cars on track, it was a spectacular send off, and fittingly ended with a photo finish between two of the Yorkshire Dales' National Champions, Graham Blackburn and Francis Corner. Several cars then said goodbye to the track with a display of "donuts".

We wish the Yorkshire Dales club well with their move to the Nationals track at Thornborough, which will be the club's new permanent venue.

Reputedly the first car to set a wheel on the Kiplin track was the Class 2 Escort of Peter Crellin, who was a long serving YD official. Amazingly the Escort's still running, now in the hands of Peter's son Marty, and has missed very few Kiplin events over the track's fourteen seasons. Sadly Peter wasn't well enough to make the hoped for appearance in the final race, but his car did duty as pace car for the rolling start, and the first car on the track was also the last to leave.

THE EAST ANGLIAN OPEN

The annual East Anglian Open Championships were held at the St Neots club's Wyboston track on 16/17 September, with a good turnout of cars for a full and separate programme of racing on each day. Saturday's meeting was completed with the East Anglian Open Championship, a series of handicap open races qualifying for a Grand Final, won by Kerry Pope in her Class 8.

Unfortunately Sunday's major title events, the East Anglian Fastest Man and Fastest Lady of the Year races, could not be completed as both ambulances had to leave the site. A lady spectator was injured by a stone following the Class 10 final, and racing then came to an end following an accident involving Spalding driver Donna Rankin (driving a borrowed Class 2 car). Donna suffered neck injuries, but we're pleased to hear she's now recovering at home.

THE BOB MOSLEY MEMORIAL

The second, and last, meeting on the present configuration of the Sturton & Stow Motor Sport Club's new Caenby Corner track, was the Bob Mosley Memorial on 10 September. This is the last time that this event will be held as a separate meeting; in future the Bob Mosley Memorial will be run as the final of the Fastest Man on Grass. Lincolnshire's newest track is also due to be re-configured and lengthened for next season.

Despite a small turnout, there was some fast and spectacular racing throughout the day. Class 8 veteran Norman Ross was the winner of the Bob Mosley Memorial Trophy.

Unfortunately the only member of the Mosley family competing, Kerry Pope, made this spectacular exit at the start of the Class 8 final.

The unluckiest driver of the weekend was Helen Grainger, who was the victim of a marker tyre pushed out by another car and rolled heavily within sight of the chequered flag in the Class 4 final.

WEBSITE UPDATES

We're sorry we didn't get time to post updates after the Yorkshire Open and the Fastest Man on Grass. Results and photos from these meetings will appear in due course, and the meetings will of course be covered in full in the magazine.

Unfortunately there's not enough daylight between the major meetings at this time of year to enable us to produce the magazine and keep the site updated.

BAS AT RADFORD

The penultimate round Kent Cams British Autograss Series took place at Radford. Despite heavy rain prior to the meeting, and a return of the wet weather in the later stages of Saturday's racing, the Radford club's usual slick organisation brought the meeting back onto schedule.

The entry was the smallest to date for this year's series; 492 cars and 585 drivers, of whom 372 were BAS contenders.

NATIONALS ACTION

Stuart Ward suffered the weekend's biggest accident, after being the innocent victim of a startline incident in the first 10 heats. Stuart was fortunately unhurt - not so his self-built Rover V8-powered car, although the popular Haverhill driver has the reputation of being willing and able to repair anything. Photo sequence by Andrea Boerngen.

Less dramatic than Stuart's accident, but we thought some of you might like another look at Phil Rogers' self-inflicted exit from the Class 10 final. At least he went out trying!

Andrea also caught following sequence of the roll by John Fuller's Class 6 Astra that brought Saturday's racing to a halt - ironically in a rerun caused (indirectly) by John's previous two-wheeled moment (above)

CAR OF THE MONTH - JULY

Yes, it's another Anglia! This one produced by Ian Clark, from March, Cambridgeshire, who regularly races a Class 6 Fiesta, but has decided to revert to the type of car he started his career in, back in the Spalding club's independent days. This one's powered by a 16 valve Vauxhall engine, driving through a Sierra rear end.

SUCCESS IN SCOTLAND

On 10/11 June, Autograss Racing finally became a truly National sport with the successful first staging of the Scottish Open Championship, the first event held by the Central Scotland Autograss Club on a beautiful venue at Lochgelly in Fife.

There was a small turnout of drivers, with the initial members of the Central Scotland club joined by visitors from Solway, Yorkshire Dales, York, Whiterose and Scarborough, plus a strong contingent from Down Autograss in Northern Ireland and the winner of a haggis and bottle of whisky for the furthest travelled driver, Roger Matthews representing Cwmdu club.

Everyone enjoyed a friendly and relaxed weekend, with some entertaining racing, and the visiting drivers all entered into the spirit of the event, helping with the organisation and answering questions from the large number of interested spectators.

For more information on Autograss racing in Scotland, please check out www.scottish-autograss.co.uk

The inaugural Scottish Champions were Arthur Cunningham (Men), Rosemary Glover (Ladies) and there was a home win in the Juniors thanks to the very promising former Kart racer Russell Valentine

The Scottish Open Championship results were:

NEXT: THE SCOTTISH OPEN

This weekend (10/11 June) sees the first ever National Autograss meeting to be held in mainland Scotland. The Scottish Open Championship, the inaugural meeting of the Central Scotland Autograss Club, takes place at Lochgelly in Fife, just off the A92. The location is around 10 miles north of the Forth road bridge. The race format comprises four heats, finals and open racing over the two days, starting at 11 am each day.

The weekend's other major event is the Robin Hood Open at Nottingham's Oxton Raceway. This comprises two separate days' racing - a Fun Day on Saturday, starting at 2pm with free entry to drivers and spectators, and the trophy meeting starting at 11 am on Sunday.

Other Sunday fixtures are scheduled at Bredon Hill (round one of the Three Counties Challenge), Concord Essex, Leewood, Ludlow, Norton Radstock, Scunthorpe, St Neots, Spalding, and York. Anyone wishing to race at St Neots is also invited to the club's annual barbecue on Saturday night, at the Wyboston track, with free camping available.

CAR OF THE MONTH - JUNE

Veteran Class 10 racer Dave Patrick told us some time ago that, as his first race car, some 40 years ago, had been a front-engined Special, so would his last race car. This Chevy V8-engined creation, built by Dave's son Andy, made a very promising debut at the MAP Open. Whether it will be Dave's last car, only time will tell ...

The meeting was in doubt until a few days beforehand, but Midland Autograss Promotions pulled it off again. The Eric Carlin Memorial MAP Open attracted a grand total of 803 entries, making it the biggest Autograss meeting of all time, and probably the biggest single motorsport event ever held in the UK in terms of competitors. This beat the previous record of 764 - set at last year's MAP Open!

In glorious weather, the almost capacity crowd watched 318 races (excluding reruns): 179 on Saturday and 139 on Sunday - an average of one race every 3.8 minutes throughout the two days! The Eric Carlin Memorial Trophy was won by James Brooks (ST10), his third major win of the season. The Ladies' Champion of Champions went to Mel Gallagher (LM9); the British Junior Championship was won by Craig Bagley (C2) and the first Junior Champion of Champions winner was Tom Lewis (BC55J)

GRICE DOUBLE AT

NORTH OF ENGLAND

After all the pre-meeting doubts, the hard-working York club presented their usual first class venue for the North of England Championships, and although quite a few potential entrants stayed away due to the uncertain weather, the meeting attracted 444 entries, in 367 cars. Of the many spectacular incidents during the weekend, the most serious involved Class 8 driver Andy Handley (Y44) - we're pleased to report that Andy was released from hospital on Monday night with two broken fingers being his only injury. Andy unfortunately missed the family celebrations as his brother in law Les Grice (Y64) took the main North of England trophy, followed immediately by daughter Nicola taking the Ladies' title after two very hard-fought Champion of Champions race. Junior Champion was first year driver "Roary J" (Jordan Blore R212).

STURTON TRACK CONFIRMED

Some good news from Lincolnshire - the Sturton & Stow Motor Sport Club's proposed new track at Caenby Corner has been granted planning permission, having received strong support from the members of the District Council Planning Committee at a meeting on 24 May.

The first meeting on the new track will take place on Sunday 23 July (the scheduled June meeting has been cancelled to allow time to prepare the venue). The Fastest Man on Grass Championships will then be held at Caenby Corner on August Bank Holiday.

THE WEATHER IS WINNING

Of the 13 race meetings listed for Sunday 21 May just three have been confirmed as going ahead (as at Saturday afternoon). These three are at CAMBRIDGE, MELTON & LEICESTER and NORTH WALES.

Although we've had no official confirmation, it's likely that the meetings at Pembroke Autograss Club and Cork are also on.

Cancelled because of wet weather are the scheduled events at Evesham, Gloucester, Ludlow, Norton Radstock, Solway and Scarborough, while the Sturton & Stow and Whiterose meetings were already cancelled because of ongoing track availability problems.

UPDATE - THE WEATHER WON!

The weekend's race programme was virtually wiped out by the weather. Melton & Leicester's meeting was cancelled early on Sunday morning after heavy overnight rain. The meeting at Cambridge went ahead with excellent track conditions to begin with, but steady rain through the day made the track surface dangerously slippery and, after an accident during the first Ladies' Class 12 heat, the meeting was abandoned for safety reasons. Our best wishes go to Bev Clark (SP335) who suffered reported leg injuries in the head-on collision with Sharon New (SN156). The meeting at North Wales was also run in very wet conditions.

ANOTHER BUSY WEEKEND

With the first BAS round out of the way, and most leagues needing to take every opportunity to fit National qualifying meetings into the crowded schedule, there were no fewer than fourteen race meetings taking place on 14 May. Among them was the East Anglian League's third national qualifier at St Neots, which attracted a smaller than usual entry of 115, although all classes were still hotly contested with the highlight being an extremely close Class 4 final won by Mark Lane.
