LATEST NEWS .... UPDATED WEDNESDAY 8 OCTOBER 2008

SEGTO WASHOUT IN KENT

The Great British Summer made a return appearance to blight the first race weekend of October. Heavy rain on Saturday caused cancellations at Central Scotland, Solway and PAC, and then the rain moved south overnight to wash out the second day of what had been turning out to be a superb Donny Littlehales Memorial meeting at STAR. North Wales, Evesham and Wessex were also forced to cancel on Sunday morning. Forest of Dean (using the Gloucester club track) and Nottingham survived the conditions and completed their events, while York escaped the weather altogether and had a full day's racing (three heats and finals) in bright sunshine!

The far south didn't escape as heavy overnight rain ruined what would have been a perfect track for the visiting SEGTO drivers, as Invicta Kent club hosted the first round of the tenth anniversary NASA-SEGTO Challenge. 129 drivers signed on, split fairly evenly between NASA and SEGTO, but the practice runs for the SEGTO drivers proved that it would be impossible to make much progress in the conditions. The planned programme was abandoned and replaced with a series of Open races until everyone had had enough. 41 drivers went out; the only classes to run on their own were the Juniors and the new Club Class 3B, featuring the Sierras of five drivers (so far) who have recently transferred from the Coombe Valley Raceway at Dover.

SUN SHINES ON

RESCHEDULED OPENS

The EAST ANGLIAN OPEN, held two weeks after its scheduled date, enjoyed ideal weather and track conditions. Early morning fog on Saturday cleared by the end of the first heats, and the rest of the event was held in warm sunshine. With few major incidents and efficient organisation the programme could be extended with an extra set of heats on Sunday and Open races on Saturday qualifying for Open finals on Sunday. The East Anglian Open didn't suffer from the loss of its BAS status; the racing was just as competitive an exciting without the pressures of points racing. Some of the classes, notably 3, 5, 6, 7 and the Junior Specials, provided possibly their closest-fought finals of the year, while a number of drivers swapped cars, including Lee Deegan, who took the Class 1 win in his first ever non-Junior meeting. Other notable results included two family 1-2s from Jason and Paul Thomas in Class 2 and Phil and Lynn Cooper in Class 9, and almost a female domination of Class 8, spoilt only by Dek Traylor splitting Kerry Pope and Aly Ostridge at the flag, while there was also a father-son double win for Vinny and Ben Gibbons. 213 drivers took part, with the furthest travelled being Pat O'Driscoll and Guy Wynn from Cork.

The YORKSHIRE OPEN was reduced to a one day meeting, but attracted an even bigger entry of 263 drivers, mainly locally based apart from Scotland's Shuggy Brown and Gary Reid. The Yorkshire Open titles went to Adam Henley and Sue Nicholls at the end of a very full day's racing.

GOING WILDE IN WATERFORD

Ireland's biggest Autograss event of the year, the "Irish Fastest Person on Grass", which was again combined with the final of the All Ireland Autograss Series, attracted 202 entries to the West Waterford club's track at Ballysaggart, Lismore. This included 38 overseas travellers from England, Wales and Scotland, plus 17 from Northern Ireland. In perfect weather and track conditions the meeting provided some of the best racing of the season, with everyone completing three heats on Saturday, and a further heat before the finals on Sunday. The ultra-efficiently run race meeting was followed by a typically Irish prizegiving at the Park Hotel, Dungarvan, where the local racers and visitors alike were finally ejected from the function room at 4 am!

The Irish Fastest Person on Grass title went to John Wilde, just a month after his comeback to Autograss in the ex-Matt Wells Class 5 Mini. The All Ireland Series was this year contested over just two rounds, at Carlow and West Waterford, and the series Champion of Champions race was won by Class 4 Micra driver James Brady. John (left) received his trophy from West Waterford club President J.P. Houlihan, while James' trophy was presented for the All Ireland committee by Danny O'Rourke.

DATE CHANGES

The EAST ANGLIAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS will be held on September 27/28 - start time 10 am each day. Although not a BAS points round, it will be a BAS format meeting - two heats on Saturday, third heat and finals on Sunday. Ladies' racing will be in Classes 1-10. All classes are sponsored with trophies to BAS standards. Depending on time, conditions and the number of entries there should also be Open racing. The venue will be open for camping from Friday afternoon. Admission is Ł15 for the weekend, including camping.

To avoid clashing with the East Anglian Open, the MELTON meeting scheduled for September 28 has been postponed to November 9, starting at 10.30 am

SCUNTHORPE will be running an extra meeting at Blyton on 12 October, start 11 am

The YORKSHIRE OPEN at Thornborough has been rescheduled as a one day event on Sunday 28 September, also qualifying as a round of the Sportway Tyres Northern Challenge.

NORTH WALES SAVE SEPTEMBER

The beginning of September saw Autograss virtually wiped out by the weather. The weekend of 6/7 September had twelve meetings scheduled but, for the first time we can remember on a mid-season weekend, every single one was cancelled. The following week, only the meetings in North Wales and Central Scotland survived. The cancellations included two high profile events; the Yorkshire Open and the East Anglian Open have both been rescheduled for the weekend of 27/28 September.

North Wales club found themselves hosting the only Open meeting held in England or Wales for three weeks, and attracted probably the biggest turnout yet to the Broughton track, coming from far and wide with 223 entries in 183 cars. The track was in good shape and conditions were remarkably dry, although the early mist never quite cleared, giving the meeting an "end of season" atmosphere. It was a special trophy meeting, sponsored by former Class 10 man Darryl Williams, and close and spectacular racing was the order of the day, with a novelty event being a full grid of fathers, big brothers and others having fun in the Junior Specials.

Same winner, different name .... although class success eluded Sandra Jones at the 2008 Ladies' and Juniors' National Championships, Sandra retained her Champion of Champions title, which she has now won in three of the last four years, by taking advantage of an early tangle between Donna Campbell and Nicola Jesse and then holding off Nicola to the finish.

Nicola Jesse repeated her mother's 1994 achievement by winning in both Class 5 and Class 8 (driving brother Blobby's 8 for only the second time). Two of the Ladies' classes were won by drivers who last year were competing in the Juniors; Becky Shaw in Class 1 and Sarah Trott, who was unbeaten all weekend in Class 2 (and only missed qualifying for the Class 1 final as well by two points). At the other end of the scale, Penny Smith added the Class 3 title to her wins in Class 10 (in 1984) and Class 5 (in 1985). Like Nicola Jesse and Becky Shaw (whose mother Mandy was twice Class 3 Champion), Donna Jones (Campbell)'s Class 4 win followed in a family tradition as her mother Jean won five titles between 1980 and 1990. Jo Thompson's win in Class 7 was her third National title, while first time winners were Donna Forrest (Class 6), Jane Baynton (Class 9 - at last!) and Carrie Mills (Class 10).

The Junior winner, beaten only once all weekend as he came out on top of 117 competitors, was Shayne Deegan, whose success came in only his second season of racing. At thirteen and a half years old Shayne MAY be the youngest ever National Champion (to verify that, we still need to check the birthday of 2001 Champion Grant Rees). The very popular and deserving new Junior Specials Champion, after probably the most exciting race yet provided by this class, was Tom Chadwick, one of the original group of drivers who first contested this class in 2005.

Penhow club made an excellent job of hosting the venue at their Magor track, and were rewarded with a mainly fine and dry weekend. Although all the club's members put in a tremendous effort, particular credit must go to Ian Doddridge and Sam Hughes, who had been thrust into the positions of Chairman and Vice Chairman only a couple of weeks before the event!

A BUSY BANK HOLIDAY

The major August Bank Holiday race meetings all enjoyed excellent turnouts, fast and action-packed racing and mostly dry weather. The three day Border Counties Autograss Festival, at Monkland in Herefordshire, was run as three separate meetings, with overall Champion of Champions races at the vend of the weekend in which the main cash prizes were grabbed by Class 2 drivers Ian Harvey and Lorraine Milnes. As usual the Border Counties event was run on a "long track" layout, incorporating a left-hand bend, while the usual chicane this year became a challenging hairpin bend. The Border Counties entry peaked at 405 drivers for Sunday's meeting.

Meanwhile Lincolnshire's Caenby Corner track was the scene of the 38th running of the oldest established championship event in Autograss, the Fastest Man on Grass. 381 drivers took part in two days of hectic action, culminating in the Fastest Man on Grass Final, won by Phil Cooper, with Kerry Pope beating her brother Karl Mosley into third place. Karl had failed to qualify through his heats following an incident with Lewis Pugh (who as a result won the trophy for "best roll") but was one of several drivers who took advantage of the unique Fastest Man on Grass Final, earning his place in the final run-off by winning the C-Final, then the B-Final to get into the Class 7 A-final. He won that too, to transfer to the Fastest Saloon on Grass final, only to be beaten there in possibly the drive of the weekend by the Class 5 of Antony Jackson. Phil Cooper was also the Fastest Special on Grass. Clare Horner won the Fastest Lady on Grass title for the third year running, and the Fastest Junior on Grass was Yorkshire Dales' Andy Dockray.

The third major event, attracting nearly 250 competitors, was the first running of the South Somerset club's Autograss Grand Prix at the Somerset Raceway near Highbridge. This proved a great success, with the unique extra ingredient of a team competition, won by an Evesham/Stroud joint venture, Fat Boy Motorsport, comprising Matt Middleton, Luke Smith and Neil and Matt Corbett.

Other two-day events that proved successful with a smaller number of competitors were those at Central Scotland and Invicta Kent.

DOWN BAS - DAY 2 SUCCESS

By Sunday the weather in Northern Ireland was hitting the National headlines, with widespread flooding in Belfast and other areas, but thanks to the magic worked by Cecil Haffey and his track preparation team, those areas did not include The Old Airfield, Maghaberry. Racing started in the wet at 7.50 am, but the rain soon cleared (returning the moment the trophy presentation was finished) and the track settled down to produce some excellent racing. Down Autograss and their many friends and helpers from among the BAS travellers, pulled off the seemingly impossible task of cramming in three full sets of heats and an incident-packed and rerun-strewn set of finals within the day - without trimming a single lap off the planned race distances.

Our congratulations and thanks to all at Down for their hard work and hospitality. Down's Chairman, Jim Lyons, asks us to thank everyone who helped and supported the club, and all the competitors for their faith and understanding.

And we hope everyone manages to find a way round the floods and road closures and makes it safely home!

DOWN BAS - DAY 1 WASHOUT

Despite the supreme efforts of Down Autograss' members torrential rain put a stop to any action on the first day of the first major British Championship event ever to be held in Northern Ireland. Heavy rain earlier in the week, which had caused widespread flooding in Ireland, let up briefly to give Down's maintenance crew the chance to work on the track all day Friday, ending the day with what looked a perfect surface. However, at 3 am on Saturday, the rain returned in earnest, falling solidly for fourteen hours, getting heavier as the day progressed.

With 270 drivers signed on to race (88 from Northern or Southern Ireland and 182 who'd crossed from England, Wales or Scotland) the start time was put back from 9 am to 10, and then to 12. The drivers' meeting took place in a torrential downpour and the majority voted to postpone racing until 8 am on Sunday.

With the rain easing off on Saturday evening, and a more favourable forecast for Sunday, the objective is now to cram as many heats in as possible on Sunday; if time does not allow the finals to be run then positions will be declared based on qualifying points.

We'll bring you more news from Down on Sunday night.

LOOKING BACK ON THE NATIONALS

As the dust settles on the superbly successful National Championships, hosted by the Wiltshire League at Javelin Park Gloucester, some of the highlights were:

  • Ollie Burley's unique achievement which means that he now holds both Junior and Senior National titles at the same time!

  • Tim Harber overhauling Ian Harvey's record to become the most successful Class 2 driver of all time;

  • The most exciting Class 9 final in recent memory, ending in a well deserved win for James Candy

And here's a look at perhaps the two most controversial moments; the Class 8 run-off between Lee Waldron and Colin Byrne, who went on to become the Champion:

.... and the coming together between Pete Robinson and Chris Jones that took Chris' Moggie Minor out of the lead of the Class 3 final.

Coming soon:

INTRODUCING COLIN

Colin will be the Yorkshire Dales club's chief cheerleader at the Nationals, by which time he'll have been kitted out with a club shirt and hi-vis jacket! As the Dales members, together with club members throughout the UK and Ireland, get into the Nationals spirit, they still had time to go racing on 27 July at last year's Nationals venue, Thornborough. 191 entries made this yet another excellent Dales meeting.

ANDY'S THE KING OF THE HILL

Class 10 driver Andy Lee took his second major trophy of the month (after winning the Alf Cope Memorial Trophy at Evesham). Andy won the "King of the Hill" title at Bredon Hill by taking the lead on the last lap of the 17-car, 12-lap Champion of Champions race. It was a suitably spectacular end to an excellent day of racing with 206 drivers signed on. Despite the scorching hot conditions, there were no major incidents but there was plenty of close and fast racing on the recently resurfaced Hilltop Raceway. The Queen of the Hill title was won by Rhiannon Smith, driving her son Kenny's Mini, while the "Princes of the Hill" were Rhys Wyeth (Juniors) and Joe Kacarevic (Junior Specials).

WEST MIDLAND OPEN DAY 2

At the end of a weekend that saw the West Midland League recapture much of the atmosphere of the League Open meetings of the past, the big winner was Class 6 man Mark Moore. Unbeaten through the weekend, Mark won a very close Champion of Champions race for the Bert Mundy Trophy and also took the Ken Hammond Trophy for the highest overall points scorer. Adding to the celebration, his son Guy was the top scorer in the Junior Specials. Clare Horner was the Ladies' Champion of Champions, while Danielle Phillips was the highest scoring lady over the weekend. Daniel Keddie was top scoring Junior although the final was won by Cameron Mills. 261 drivers took part in Sunday's racing in dry and mostly sunny conditions at The Ovals, Lyonsall, which is the oldest Autograss venue in continuous use.

WEST MIDLAND OPEN DAY 1

The West Midland Open promised to provide an interesting comparison between a "traditional" regional Open meeting and a BAS round, held at the same venue four weeks earlier. The Open was held in what used to be the routine format, with two separate full days' racing. Exactly 200 drivers took part in Saturday's event, with a mixture of sunshine and brief showers producing excellent conditions and an incident free day's racing.

SUNNY SCUNNY!

Yes, really! Once again the Scunthorpe and District club recovered from what looked like a disastrously wet start to complete a BAS round in perfect conditions, and in what was a record time for the number of competitors. 515 drivers signed on, in 446 cars, of whom 326 were BAS contenders and 189 were there just because they knew it would be a good event. The rain stopped just as the first race lined up, and soon the track was drying out, becoming as hard and slick as usual in Saturday afternoon and Sunday's fine weather. Despite extensive track maintenance and several time consuming incidents on Saturday, racing finished on time at 6 pm, while on Sunday it was all over before 4.30!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SOLWAY!

NASA's second youngest club celebrated its tenth birthday at the Cumberland Open Championship, held at Hay Close, Calthwaite, near Penrith. A good turnout of drivers from across the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland refused to let their spirits be dampened by wet and muddy conditions.

The overall Cumberland Champion title went to Class 1 driver Dave Roberts (YD850), the former Shropshire lad who was "adopted" by the Yorkshire Dales for this year. Class 2 driver Lin Cunningham (SL1) successfully defended the Ladies' title and Callum Wing (YD830) was the Junior Champion.

However, as at St Neots, charity fund raising, fun and games were what this event was all about, including a special "drag" race that even tempted commentator George Capper into the driving seat of Don Hilton's Corsa! Here's a taste of what you'll find in Andrea's photo galleries:

BOB ROBINS MEMORIAL

The St Neots club's Bob Robins Memorial charity meeting began with 122 drivers enjoying a dry and sunny Saturday "fun day" with a 1980s style race format. The class heats featured up to 16 cars started from grid positions handicapped according to previous race results. Adding to the fun, (not intentionally!) the points scoring system was changed part way through the day, introducing an element of surprise into the final results. The racing then gave way to a best presented wheelbarrow competition, a tug-o-war, wheelbarrow race, sponsored leg wax, and other fund raising fun and games.

ACTION NORTH AND SOUTH

The last weekend of June saw plenty of racing on offer throughout the country, from West Wales and Wessex to Central Scotland. The non-stop run of major events continued with the West Wales Open Championship, while northern racers had their own two-day event at SCARBOROUGH, with a fun day on Saturday followed by the annual Dash for Cash meeting on Sunday. The picturesque Hunmanby venue saw some excellent action, which included Alan Suttle getting airborne, almost on the anniversary of his big roll at the same track last year.
